Dia vs Mermaid: Visual Editor vs Text Diagrams

Dia Diagram Editor is a free, open-source project by the GNOME community. This site is an independent community resource — we are not affiliated with the GNOME Dia project.

Developers choosing a diagramming tool in 2026 usually land on this fork: draw with your mouse (Dia) or write diagrams as code (Mermaid). Both are free and open-source. The right choice depends entirely on who draws and where the diagram lives.

Choose Mermaid when…

  • Diagrams live inside Markdown docs — READMEs, wikis, Notion, GitHub render Mermaid natively.
  • You want docs-as-code: diagrams reviewed in pull requests, versioned with the code.
  • The diagram types you need are in Mermaid’s catalog (flowchart, sequence, ER, state, Gantt).

Choose Dia when…

  • You need precise visual control — print-ready network maps, rack elevations, annotated schematics.
  • Diagram types Mermaid doesn’t do well: circuit diagrams, detailed network topologies, BPMN, floor plans.
  • Non-developers must edit the diagram — nobody teaches the marketing team Mermaid syntax.
  • You want a standalone file to email, print, or archive.
%% Mermaid looks like this:
graph TD
    A[Order received] --> B{Payment OK?}
    B -- Yes --> C[Ship it]
    B -- No --> D[Notify customer]

In Dia, the same flowchart is four boxes and three arrows drawn by hand — slower to write, prettier to print.

Many teams use both: Mermaid for sequence diagrams in the repo docs, Dia for the network architecture poster on the office wall. They’re complements, not rivals. (Mermaid has no affiliate program — this recommendation earns us nothing.)

FAQ

Can Mermaid do everything Dia does?

No — Mermaid covers common diagram types with auto-layout. Anything needing precise placement (racks, circuits, floor plans) belongs in Dia.

Can Dia import Mermaid diagrams?

No. Render the Mermaid diagram to SVG and import the SVG into Dia as a starting point if needed.

Which is better for documentation?

Markdown-based docs: Mermaid. Standalone/PDF documentation: Dia. See our export guide.

Is Mermaid really free?

Yes — MIT licensed, free forever, including the live editor.
