Can Dia Open VSDX Files? (Honest Answer)

Short answer: No. Dia cannot open .vsdx files (the Visio format used since Visio 2013). Dia can import the older .vdx format (Visio XML, pre-2013) — but not .vsdx, .vsd binary, or .vsdm. This is confirmed by the official Dia documentation’s import/export format list. We will not pretend otherwise.

What Dia Can and Cannot Import

  • Can import: .vdx (Visio XML), .svg, .dxf, XFig, common bitmap formats
  • Cannot import: .vsdx, .vsd (binary), .vsdm — i.e. every Visio format from the last decade
  • Can export: .svg, .png, .pdf, .eps and more
Why the confusion? Many “free Visio alternative” roundups imply Dia opens Visio files. Technically true for ancient .vdx — practically useless for the .vsdx files people actually receive today. If someone sent you a .vsdx, Dia alone will not open it.

Workarounds That Actually Work

  1. draw.io / diagrams.net (free): open the .vsdx there, then export as SVG and import the SVG into Dia. Layout usually survives; expect minor cleanup.
  2. LibreOffice Draw (free): opens many .vsdx files — export to PDF or SVG, then bring into Dia.
  3. Ask the sender: the cleanest fix. Ask for SVG or PDF export — any Visio user can do this in seconds via File > Export.
  4. Microsoft’s free Visio viewer: if you only need to view (not edit), Microsoft offers a free viewer.

Going Forward: Stop the Problem at the Source

If your team keeps hitting this wall, standardize on an interchange format: SVG for vector diagrams. Dia, draw.io, LibreOffice and Visio all read and write SVG. One shared format ends the conversion dance permanently.

Need a Free Diagram Tool Anyway?

Dia won’t open your .vsdx — but for everything you draw yourself, it’s free and offline.

Frequently Asked Questions

Will Dia ever support VSDX?

Unlikely. The project is in maintenance mode (see is Dia still maintained?), and VSDX reverse-engineering is a major undertaking. Don’t wait for it.

What about .vsd (old binary format)?

Also not supported. Only the XML-based .vdx variant imports.

Does the SVG round-trip preserve everything?

Shapes and layout mostly survive; text formatting and complex Visio-specific features may need touch-ups in Dia.

Can Dia save as VSDX for Visio users?

No. Export SVG or PDF — Visio opens both.
