Dia is a free, open-source diagram editor for drawing flowcharts, UML diagrams, network maps, ER diagrams, and circuit schematics. This page covers everything Windows users need: where to get a safe installer, how to install it on Windows 11, 10, 8, or 7, and how to fix the two most common problems (SmartScreen warnings and blurry text on high-DPI screens).
Download Dia for Windows
The current stable Windows build is Dia 0.97.2. It was released back in 2011–2012, which sounds ancient, but it remains the last fully packaged Windows release and it still runs fine on Windows 11 once you apply the two small fixes described below. The installer is about 20 MB, bundles its own GTK+ runtime, and needs no internet connection to run.

How to install Dia on Windows (step by step)
Step 1 — Run the installer
Double-click the downloaded dia-setup-0.97.2.exe file. If Windows asks “Do you want to allow this app to make changes?”, click Yes. On the component selection screen, make sure Translations and Integrated Shapes are checked — translations give you a localized interface, and the shape libraries (UML, network, flowchart, electrical) are the whole point of Dia.
Step 2 — Handle the SmartScreen warning
Because Dia’s installer was built in 2012 and is not code-signed with a modern certificate, Windows SmartScreen will likely show a blue “Windows protected your PC” screen saying the app is from an unknown publisher. This is normal for old open-source software and does not mean the file is unsafe — the installer is the byte-identical upstream release from dia-installer.de.
- On the SmartScreen screen, click More info.
- A Run anyway button appears. Click it to continue the installation.
- If your antivirus quarantines the file, restore it and add an exclusion — false positives on decade-old unsigned installers are common.
Step 3 — Finish and launch
Accept the GPL license, choose the install folder (the default C:\Program Files (x86)\Dia is fine), and finish. Launch Dia from the Start menu. First startup takes a few seconds while it loads the shape libraries.
Fix blurry text and UI on high-DPI / 4K screens
Dia 0.97.2 predates Windows’ per-monitor DPI scaling, so on modern laptops and 4K monitors its interface can look blurry. The fix takes 30 seconds:
- Right-click the Dia shortcut (or
dia.exe) and choose Properties. - Open the Compatibility tab and click Change high DPI settings.
- Check Override high DPI scaling behavior and set Scaling performed by to System (try System (Enhanced) first on Windows 11 — it gives crisper text on most machines).
- Click OK, restart Dia, and the interface should render sharply.
What you get: version notes
The Windows installer ships Dia 0.97.2 — the last stable release packaged for Windows. A 0.97.3 release exists (2014), but it was only ever properly packaged for Linux; on Windows, 0.97.2 remains the version to use. Linux distributions typically ship 0.97.3 or newer builds from source — see our Dia for Linux guide for details. Feature-wise the two are nearly identical for everyday diagramming.
Quick start: draw your first diagram
- Open Dia and choose File > New.
- In the toolbox, pick a sheet (e.g. UML, Flowchart, or Network) from the dropdown.
- Drag shapes onto the canvas, then drag connection lines between the small green/blue connection points so the lines stick to the objects.
- Double-click any object to edit its text and properties.
- Export with File > Export — SVG for the web, PNG for documents, or EPS for print.

Export formats at a glance
One of Dia’s strengths is how many formats it can export to. Choose based on where the diagram is going:
| Format | Best for | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| SVG | Web pages, wikis | Scales infinitely; editable in Inkscape or Illustrator |
| PNG | Word docs, slides, email | Set a high resolution in the export dialog for crisp prints |
| EPS | LaTeX documents, print | Vector; the classic academic choice |
| DXF | CAD workflows | For importing linework into CAD tools |
| FIG / XFig | Legacy Unix workflows | Niche, but supported |
| .dia (native) | Archiving, sharing with other Dia users | Always keep the .dia original — exports are one-way |
What’s actually in 0.97.2
Dia 0.97.2 was a bugfix and maintenance release: 28 bug fixes, extensive translation updates, and one small new feature (more colors for SADT diagrams). It also shipped with updated base libraries in the 0.97.2-2 repackaging. Don’t expect a modern ribbon UI — what you get is a fast, stable, no-nonsense diagram editor that opens instantly and never phones home.
Uninstalling Dia
Go to Settings > Apps > Installed apps, find Dia, and click Uninstall. Your .dia diagram files are left untouched. If you also want to remove personal settings, delete the .dia folder in your user profile directory.
Frequently asked questions
Is Dia really free for Windows?
Yes. Dia is released under the GNU General Public License (GPL). It is free for personal, academic, and commercial use — no trial, no watermark, no “pro” version.
Is the Windows installer safe?
The installer linked above is the official upstream build from dia-installer.de (hosted on SourceForge), unmodified. The SmartScreen “unknown publisher” warning appears only because the 2012 installer is not signed with a modern certificate — this is expected and documented in Step 2 above.
Does Dia work on Windows 11?
Yes. Dia 0.97.2 installs and runs on Windows 11. Apply the high-DPI fix above if the interface looks blurry, and use More info → Run anyway to pass SmartScreen.
Why is there no newer Windows version?
The Dia project slowed down after 0.97.2 (2011) for Windows packaging, though a 0.97.3 source release followed in 2014. The Windows build of 0.97.2 remains stable and complete for flowchart, UML, network, and ER diagramming, which is why the community still distributes it.
Can I install Dia without admin rights?
The standard installer needs admin rights. If you don’t have them, use the portable version — just extract the ZIP and run it, no installation required.
Where are my diagrams saved?
Dia saves in its native .dia format. Use File > Export for SVG, PNG, EPS, DXF, and other formats. Your .dia files open on Windows, Mac, and Linux interchangeably.
